Free test maker for students: build a self-scoring practice test

By the Qwenvo team · · 3 min read

To make a free practice test, turn your notes into multiple choice questions, add a score that goes up for each right answer, and show the total on the results page. Qwenvo does this with calculated fields at $0, and respondents need no account. Share the link with your study group.

How a self-scoring test works

There is no separate quiz mode. A Qwenvo test is a form with a number that goes up when someone picks the right answer. That number is a variable. You set it to zero, add a rule per question, and print it on the thank-you page. This takes longer to set up than a one-click quiz mode, but it lets you weight hard questions, give partial credit and show different messages for different scores.

Turn your notes into questions

  • Pick one topic per test. A test on a whole course is a stack of tests.
  • Write the question from a fact you got wrong last time. Those are the useful ones.
  • Make wrong answers believable. A distractor nobody would pick teaches nothing.
  • Use Multiple choice or Dropdown for one right answer, and Checkboxes when several are right.
  • Use Short answer for recall, but mark those by hand. Automatic scoring works best on choices.

You can ask the AI to draft questions on a topic: press Ctrl J inside a form to open Ask Qwenvo. Check every answer yourself. AI-written questions can be wrong, and a test with a wrong key teaches the wrong thing.

Build the scoring

  1. Create a free account and open the knowledge check quiz template, or start blank.
  2. Replace the sample questions with yours, one per block.
  3. Type / and add a Calculated fields block above the questions. Create a number variable named score and set it to 0.
  4. Add a Conditional logic block. For each question, add a rule: when the answer is the correct option, calculate score as score plus 1.
  5. On the Thank-you page, write "You scored @score" using @ to insert the variable.
  6. Add bands: show "Revise this topic again" for a low score and "Ready to move on" for a high one.
  7. Preview and answer every question wrongly, then rightly, and check the score each time.

Keep the Calculated fields block above the rules that change it, because rules replay from top to bottom. The full method is in the quiz maker with scoring guide.

Teach while they test

A practice test works best when it explains. Put each question on its own page with the New page block, then add a show/hide rule that reveals a Text block with the explanation after the answer. With Progress bar on, learners see how far they have gone. To avoid giving the answer away on a reusable test, write explanations that teach the idea without repeating the key.

Share and repeat

  • Copy the public link from the Share tab and post it in your study group.
  • Leave Prevent duplicate submissions off, so people can retake the test.
  • Make a copy per topic. A folder per course keeps them organized.
  • Open Submissions to see everyone's scores, and export CSV if you want to track progress over weeks.
  • Use Insights to see which questions most people got wrong. Those are the ones to revise.

A fun variation: the trivia round

For a game rather than a test, start from the online trivia quiz template. It scores five questions and shows the result on the thank-you page, and you can swap the questions for any subject. Add a Short answer for each player's name and compare the scores in Submissions.

What this is not

This is a study tool, not a secure exam. Anyone with the link can open it again, share it or try different answers, so do not use it for a grade that matters. If you need a quick graded quiz inside a school that already uses Google accounts, Google Forms has a built-in quiz mode that is faster to set up. Qwenvo is the better choice when you want custom score bands, calculated values or a design that is your own.

Questions people ask

Can I randomize the question order?

Plan for a fixed order. Reorder the options yourself between versions of the test if you want to stop people memorizing by position.

Can I make a timed test?

Qwenvo has no countdown timer block. Use a close date to end a test window instead.

Is it free for students?

Yes. Every feature is on for every account at $0, with no student tier needed.
