How to Create a Form for People to Fill Out (Free, 5 Steps)

By the Qwenvo team · · 3 min read

To create a form people can fill out, sign up for a free Qwenvo account, click New form, type a title, press / to add each question, then click Publish and send the link from the Share tab. The whole thing takes a few minutes, and respondents need no account.

Before you build: write down what you need to know

Open a notes app and list the decisions the answers will feed. If you will not act on a question, do not ask it. A form with six questions you need beats a form with fifteen you might need.

  • Who fills it out? Customers, staff, students, volunteers. This sets your tone and how much detail you can ask for.
  • What will you do with each answer? Reply by email, sort into groups, pay out, schedule. Keep only the questions that lead to an action.
  • How will you collect the answers? A link you send, a page on your site, or both.

Create the form in five steps

  1. On the dashboard, click New form. Type a title and press Enter. The editor works like a document, so you are already on the page.
  2. Type / on a new line to open the block menu. Pick a question type: Short answer, Long answer, Multiple choice, Checkboxes, Dropdown, Email, Phone number, Date, File upload, Rating and more. A title block and the input are added together.
  3. Add a Thank-you page at the end so people know it worked. You can use @ inside text to repeat an earlier answer, for example thanking them by name.
  4. Click Preview and fill the form in yourself, on your phone as well as your computer.
  5. Click Publish. You land on the Share tab with the public link. Copy it and send it by email, chat or social media.

Prefer not to start from a blank page? On the empty-form screen, describe the form to the AI builder (for example, a signup form for a weekend workshop with name, email and dietary needs) and edit what it drafts. You can also start from one of the 180+ free templates, such as the contact form or the registration form.

Choose the right question type

  • Short answer for names and one-line facts; Long answer only when you want a story.
  • Multiple choice or Dropdown when you already know the possible answers. Choices are easier to count than free text.
  • Email, Phone number, Number and Link check the format as people type, which saves cleaning up later.
  • Rating or Linear scale for opinions you want to average.
  • Checkboxes or Multi-select when more than one answer can be true.

Settings worth a minute

Open Settings on the form. Most forms need only a few of these:

  • Email notifications to you on every submission, and confirmation emails to respondents.
  • Close on a date or after a number of responses, if the form is for a limited event.
  • Prevent duplicate submissions when each person should answer once.
  • Qwenvo branding: switch it off for a clean look. It is free.
  • Redirect on completion if you want to send people to another page instead of the thank-you page.

Common mistakes

  • Making every question required. People abandon forms that demand things they do not have. Require only what you cannot act without.
  • Skipping the preview. Check logic, the thank-you page and the mobile view before the first real person does.
  • Sending the link before testing a submission. Submit once yourself and confirm the answer lands in Submissions and your email.
  • Vague labels. Write 'Your work email', not 'Email 2'.

One honest limit: there is no Qwenvo mobile app. Forms run in any phone browser, which is what your respondents use, and you can build in a browser too.

Yes. The Customize panel has colours, fonts, button styles, layout, a logo and a cover image. See customize your form. All of it is free.
